Plug-in missing after Photoshop update

Issue

After installing a Photoshop Update your plug-ins are no longer available in the Filters menu. This happens because plug-ins do not automatically transfer when you install a new version of Photoshop.

Solution

Download and run the installer for your plug-in version to add it to your new Photoshop application.

Before you run your installer, launch and then quit the new Photoshop version. This creates a record that allows our installers to recognize the new version.

Current products have been updated to recognize and install to the most recent supported host applications. Download Updates

Older products can be installed to new host applications. Download and run the installer. Recent versions will install without trouble. If the Host Selection step does not show the new Photoshop version, you’ll need to do a custom installation covered later in this article. Old Installers

More information about Photoshop CC 2015.5 and newer versions

Traditionally each major Photoshop update required users to reinstall all of their plug-ins to the new version. This is because plug-ins were stored in an version specific location and the contents are not moved forward to new versions.

Adobe made a significant change with the Photoshop CC 2015.5 update that ends the need for this extra work. Plug-ins can now be stored in a shared Creative Cloud location. This will load the plug-in for all installed versions of Photoshop CC including Photoshop CC, Photoshop CC 2014, 2015, 2015.5, and future versions like CC 2017 when they are released.

Photoshop CC versions released after 2015.5 will also use the shared Creative Cloud location.

Current Products

Installers for Exposure X, Snap Art 4, and Blow Up 3 and the Exposure X Bundle have been updated to install to the new shared Creative Cloud location. You will not need to reinstall for future Photoshop CC updates. Download Updates

If the installer does not see your updated version of Photoshop, launch and then quit the new Photoshop version. This creates a record that allows our installers to recognize the new version. Run the installer again to complete the installation.

Older Software Versions

There are two ways to install older product versions to Photoshop CC 2015.5 and beyond. Before you start download the installer for your plug-in. Old Installers

Option 1: Normal installation to version specific location

This option is simple, but will require reinstallation for future Photoshop updates. Download and run the installer for your plug-in. Select your new Photoshop version during the Host Selection step. The installer will place the program in the Photoshop version specific location.

If the installer does not see your updated version of Photoshop, launch and then quit the new Photoshop version. This creates a record that allows our installers to recognize the new version. Run the installer again to complete the installation. If it still doesn't see you new version, it will require a custom installation covered in the next step.

Option 2: Custom install to shared Creative Cloud location

This step requires a bit more work, but the plug-in won’t have to be reinstalled after future updates.

Run the installer for your plug-in. At the Host Selection step look for the Custom Install button.

If you don't see it, push Alt-C (Windows) or Option-C (Mac) to show the button.

Click on Custom Install.

Select Browse and navigate to the Creative Cloud shared location.

OS X: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CC

Windows: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC

After you set the path to the shared location, press Continue to complete the installation.

Your plug-in will now be available in the Filters menu of your new Photoshop version.
